Don’t get me wrong, I’m finding that writing a weblog as a WordPress-hosted column is great; I can afford it for one thing *smile*. I get to do a bit of show-and-tell not otherwise possible, and this is rewarding, until I run into things that fall down, site-style-wise and could be made better by going off the WordPress reservation. My beef today is that when the small version of an image in the main text of my blog is clicked it takes the viewer to a larger version, which is good, displayed left-justified on a blinding white page which ruins the ability to see the image due to its glaring contrast; which is *not* good. Apparently, this is how Things Will Be, unless at some point I can find an affordable host site on which to load the WordPress software and my weblog. I see other folks customizing things with which I’d like to fiddle and it makes me think about how to make a transfer. Happily, a good list to work with is right on the LVS blogging blog in the Hall of Fame Student listings here, at Learn to Do It Right. Planning ahead for a swap makes a bunch of sense to me and this blog entry by Viki Nygaard goes along step by step towards the goal of easing into a new host without dropping off of the blogosphere radar to do so. Makes me a little impatient to try to spruce up my efforts, at least where I can remember the xhtml and css codings I haven’t used in a hamster’s years; alas, it will have to wait for a $erendipitou$ moment.
I *can,* however, Be Prepared by keeping the rss feed in my Live Bookmarks and learn from all of the posts on Learn to do it Right. Thanks, Viki!
Cheers!

Hm. This is supposed to be an image presentation blog. Recent events have me looking about for pictures of former furry family members. Here’s Dare, with his own tiny pumpkin, lit within by a military surplus “grain of wheat” lamp, taken under incandescent room light (color balanced a bit in Paint Shop Pro 9+); he was not impressed with the pumpkin smell, lol.
Ah Pete, if you do the switch you won’t be sorry. I had to laugh about you adding an image as an after thought. I am a visual person and I just feel like my posts aren’t complete if I don’t throw some kind of image in there

Heeheeheelol…
Hi Anita, yes, guilty, caught….I felt totally befuddled at the idea of not posting any image at all, so I went with “Old Family Holiday” shots for a category and got it scanned..which is not a happy part of my workflow. Takes about 15-20 minutes per image to process them to a distant sort of “close to the original”. That shot always reminds me of a long-exposure river cataract shot…it was a several second exposure and his breathing was enough to ’silken’ the image of his fur…oops rambling on again. ahem. erm Oh, yes, i imagine it’s fun getting your page to look the way you expect from the front page style. Thanks to Bean’s reminding me about that part of the widget settings I’m looking forward to trying a post that way but I’m so far behind now I don’t think i can take the time, yet.
Thanks for the nudge, if $omething change$ in the world, i’ll be back to that particular post of Viki’s…post haste.
Cheers!

Hi Pete,
I agree with Anita. Using the self-hosted version of WordPress will give you a world of options compared to what you have now. Good luck with the switch if you decide to proceed, and thanks for the pingback!
Hey Viki!
Okay, okay, I’m seeing the consensus, lolol, and when it becomes something I can afford I’ll be changing horses, midstream or no. I’ve wanted to build a gallery since before the turn of the century (I love how long that makes things sound ,lol), even more so after taking the xhtml and css courses. I suppose by now the rusty memories of coding I retained are out of date, but I’d still like to present a little better than I am currently. Thanks for the confirmation of what I’m ‘hearing’ typed around here ,lol. Also, thanks for putting your tips up for the unabashedly disorganized of us to follow!
Cheers!

Pete,
Let me know what your budget is and I bet I can help you make something happen.
You have such a great conversational style on this blog. You really engage your readers. I would certainly like to see you continue with the project in a way that gives you a lot more creative freedom and flexibility.
Hi Bean! Budget? isn’t that some small colorful Australian bird? Thanks for the offer. I need to work on the lessons, but maybe I’ll shoot you something in email in a while and see what you think. I’ve run into another little snag that may alter things. The scanner I’ve been using started running too hot and heat-warped four slides before I caught on. Needless to say, I’m not rabidly excited by the prospect of warping more so I’ll have to do some testing with dud slides and find out if there is some setting change that won’t damage things. sigh.
Who knows, with my rusty coding, freedom to play in the formatting may well just allow me to turn my blog into a Gordian knot, lol.
Thanks for your guidance and the kind, very supportive remarks about der ‘blog. I hope some day to finish this first session*smile*.
Cheers,
pete
